Ph.D seminar - The Arabic culture in the light of literature 3600-DD-SD-EMM
The seminar covers the main issues of Arabic culture in the light of images and approaches to literature. The most important phenomena of development of the modern Arabic literature (since XIX/ XX centuries) will be described. The classical period of Arabic literature will be compared with the modern one. The seminar is devoted to great Arabic writers, poets and their cultural and political impact . The main question to be discussed in the course of the seminar will refer to the problem of patriarchal structure of Arab society, rights and duties of women and their reflection in the Arabic prose. Formation of a new genre of women literature in the 2nd half of the 20 century seems to be one of the most important issues in this period. The seminar covers also connections between the Arabic theatre and film. Among the most important issues of seminar is the significance of identity in the Arab world and abroad.

Knowledge
- knows an output of the Arabic literature from Renaissance (2nd half XIX- 2nd half XX c.)
- knows basic tends and tendencies of development of Arabic culture (since 2nd half of XIX century) .)
- has detailed and organized knowledge of literary currents and trends of the contemporary Arab literature
- has detailed and organized knowledge of the most outstanding writers of modern Arab literature.
- has detailed and organized knowledge of basic literary forms In the Arabic language including poetry, prose and drama.
- has detailed and organized knowledge on Arab literary studies and literary criticism
- can name and characterize basic cultural phenomena of Muslim countries
- knows basic terminology in the range of modern Arabic literature and culture
- has basic knowledge of the place and significance of Arabic literature in general, literary studies and its specificity
- has basic knowledge in the field of compared literatures
Skills
- can use the Arabic terminology from the domain of Arabic literature
- can read, analyze and interpret literary texts and other works of cultural creativity (film, press, social texts)
- can compare and perceive interrelations between chosen literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) and the issues within the scope of tradition and modern times
- can see reflection of social, moral and political problems in the modern Arabic literature
- can summarize the most important phenomena, currents and trends of the contemporary Arab literature
- can interpret key terms from a culture of Arab countries through linguistic/philological analysis
- has the ability of substantive argumentation with the use of other authors’ views
- can analyze and interpret source texts in Arabic
- can appropriately use the basic notions in the field of Arabic culture and literature
- can see the relations between the cultural and literary phenomena in the Arabic world.

Discussion and choosing subjects of presentations, their methodology, literature, main thesis and assumptions.
