Peoples and languages of Asia Minor 1 (Hittite subject group) 3600-7-WS4-LJAMW(Z)
The following languages will be the focus of the lecture in the first semester: The Hattic, Palaic, Hurrian, cuneiform Luwian and introduction to the hieroglyphic Luwian. The lecture provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of the grammar of the aforementioned languages, in addition to the historical and cultural context in which each of these languages originated. This includes the origin of the various peoples of Asia Minor during the Bronze Age, an overview of their history, and structured information regarding their culture and religion, with particular emphasis on the Hittite language. The student will also be introduced to the different varieties of writing used in Asia Minor (the cuneiform script of Hurrian and Luwian, as well as the hieroglyphic script used to write Luwian), the structure of the aforementioned languages and the preserved wititten sources.
