Methodological lecture: Selected aspects literary studies 3600-7-WO4-PML1
The objective of the methodological lecture of Literatures and Cultures of Asia and Africa Lab is to offer an overview of the most important problems that are dealt with in literary studies, including literary terms and terminology from the perspective of theoretical schools and trends that assumed importance in the 20th century.
Lecture is dedicated to the first year students of second-cycle studies (MA level) who are interested in literature understood as a cultural practice and who participate in the specialisation seminar on literatures and cultures of Asia and Africa; it is also recommended for PhD level students of similar interests.
In direct relation to the leading theme of the Lab seminar, the following problems will be discussed:
• orality–literacy theory
• Toronto School of Communication.
Next, the following subjects will be dealt with:
• what is literature and does it matter? (J. Culler),
• the most important theoretical schools and trends in the 20th literary studies, such as:
- Russian formalism,
- Mikhail Bachtin's cultural interpretation of literature,
- New Criticism.

Assessment criteria
Final exam in the form of a written test or an oral exam; a knowledge of readings from the obligatory list absolutely required.
