MA Seminar 3600-7-SI5-SM1
The seminar offers students the opportunity to undertake the interesting topic and research it for the Master’s degree thesis. All the support to finalize the results of his/her work in M.A. thesis is provided. The seminar is also to provide students with the knowledge of the selected topics in linguistics, and to demonstrate the research methods applied in the domain. The main purposes are to help students get through the process of learning how to research, how to select an appropriate topic of interest, formulate the main research questions, choose the research methods, search for the data, analyze and interpret selected materials, organize findings into a presentation, a paper, and finally a M.A. thesis. Research subjects conform to the interests of students.

Knowledge
- has in-depth and detailed knowledge (including terminology, theory and methodology) in linguistic studies (K_W01);
- has extended knowledge of particular problems pertaining to the cultures of the Orient (within the scope of culture and language) in a comparative perspective (K_W02);

- has detailed knowledge pertaining to the state of research on chosen issues related to China as well as in-depth knowledge of research centers in Poland and all over the world (K_W05);
- knows and understands advanced analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture in China within the scope of linguistics (K_W06);
- knows and understands the local academic tradition (methods of analysis, interpretation and evaluation) of China (K_W07);
- demonstrates good grasp of contemporary cultural life of China and Taiwan (K_W08);
- has wide and profound knowledge of the structures and social relations as well as socio-cultural behaviors of China and Taiwan in the scope conditioning professional social and intercultural verbal communication (K_W10);
- knows and understands the rules of copyright and intellectual property management (K_W11).
Skills
- can search for, analyze, evaluate and use information from different sources and can form critical judgement on its basis (K_U01);
- can indicate sources of cultural differences between the countries of the Orient, also on the basis of source materials (K_U02);
- can acquire knowledge independently and enhance research skills as well as develop abilities to build a professional career (K_U03);

- can read, analyze and interpret advanced literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of China and Taiwan and appropriately place them in their cultural context (K_U08);

- can carry out a critical analysis and interpretation of different products of culture of China and Taiwan in a way which is appropriate to a chosen tradition, theory and research school within the scope of linguistics, employing unique approaches that take into account the knowledge in the field of Chinese studies (K_U10);

- has superior skill at presenting detailed aspects within the scope of cultural issues of China and Taiwan in Polish and in modern Chinese language, taking into consideration the intellectual tradition of China (K_U18);
- has superior skill at formulating own opinions and conclusions in writing and in speech both in Polish and in modern standard Chinese (K_U19);
- has superior skill in substantive argumentation with the use of other authors’ views (K_U20);
- can expertly use advanced electronic and internet tools in Polish and in Chinese (K_U21).

Assessment criteria
Attendance obligatory (maximum 2 unjustified absences a semester). Classroom active participation required. Two oral and written presentations every semester (one in English) of the student’s research process and results.
