This course aims to enhance students’ listening comprehension and oral communication skills in everyday and sociocultural contexts.
Through diverse listening materials, situational dialogues, thematic discussions, and oral communication tasks, students will be able to:
Understand spoken Mandarin on a variety of topics, identifying main ideas, important details, and speakers’ viewpoints.
Apply previously acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures to describe personal experiences, explain everyday situations and social phenomena, and express ideas and opinions clearly.
Understand questions and viewpoints expressed by others and develop interactive communication skills through appropriate responses, elaboration, and exchanges of opinions.
Develop a deeper understanding of Taiwanese society and culture through discussions of everyday life and sociocultural topics, while comparing perspectives across different cultural and social contexts.
Weekly Course Schedule
Week 1: Course Introduction and Listening & Speaking Warm-up
Weeks 2–5: Unit 1 – Everyday Life and Interpersonal Relationships
Weeks 6–9: Unit 2 – Learning and Personal Development
Weeks 10–13: Unit 3 – Modern Life and Social Phenomena
Weeks 14–15: Final Oral Examination
Note: Course content and the weekly schedule may be adjusted according to students’ learning progress and the pace of the main language course.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Understand the main ideas, relevant details, and speakers’ viewpoints in spoken Mandarin on familiar everyday and sociocultural topics.
Describe personal experiences, explain situations and social phenomena, and express opinions using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Participate in conversations and discussions by asking and answering questions, responding appropriately, and exchanging opinions.
Express and support personal viewpoints on familiar topics with increasing fluency, coherence, and communicative confidence.
Discuss selected aspects of Taiwanese society and culture and compare them with their own cultural and social experiences.
Assessment criteria
1. Attendance and class participation — 35%
Students are expected to attend classes regularly, participate actively in discussions and speaking activities, and complete in-class tasks.
2. Preparation assignments — 25%
Preparatory assignments may include listening to assigned audio recordings or watching videos, answering listening comprehension questions, preparing for thematic discussions, and completing short oral communication tasks.
3. Final oral examination — 40%

Duration: Approximately 10 minutes per student. The examination will be conducted over two weeks.

Fluency and coherence of spoken expression
Appropriate use of vocabulary and grammatical structures
Completeness of responses and ability to express viewpoints
Pronunciation, tones, and overall communicative ability
Attendance policy
Students are expected to attend classes punctually and regularly.
If absences exceed 6 hours, 3 points will be deducted from the final grade for every additional 1.5 hours of absence.
