Reading in Chinese texts 3600-7-SI2-LTCH1
The main aim of the course is to teach reading comprehension, but the emphasis is placed on understanding syntactic connections, vocabulary, context, etc., particularly with the linguistic structures, grammatical constructions and vocabulary typical of various types of Chinese texts, as well as indicating methods for proper interpretation, as well as equivalent and appropriate translation into Chinese. The prepared texts deal with current Chinese issues and are divided into thematic blocks that cover three meetings. Each block can introduce a maximum of 40 words directly related to the topic. In the perspective of one semester class, this gives a total of 160 words. Vocabulary must be mastered to such an extent that a prepared text can be translated for credit without the use of dictionaries (physical and electronic) or any other aids.

Term 2024Z:
During the classes, students read together with the tutor a selection of texts from the Step by Step Chinese coursebook, which are then analysed and discussed together. The tutor also explains new grammatical structures and the use of new vocabulary. The texts in the textbook have preparations, are annotated and have English translations of some of the words and phrases found in the individual texts The applicable lessons from Volume I of the textbook are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7; from Volume II: 1, 4, 5, 6, 8; from Volume III: 2, 4, 5, 8, 9. The class also includes discussing the grammatical constructions occurring in the texts and doing exercises with them. Classes can be taken online if necessary |

Knowledge
- has detailed and organized knowledge of literature and writings of China; can name and characterize most important phenomena/trends/literary texts/writings of China, Taiwan, and Chinese civilization circle (K_W05);
- has extensive knowledge of the Chinese language (its structure, history, script) (K_W12);
- is aware of the complex nature of the Chinese language, its place and significance in the cultural and historical context of China, Taiwan and Chinese civilization circle

- is aware of the linguistic variety and its influence on the cultural and political situation of the world (K_W14);

- can compare and perceive interrelations between chosen literary texts and other works of culture of China and Chinese civilization circle (film, press, social writing) and the issues within the scope of tradition and modern times (K_U07);
- is able to analyze and interpret source texts in Chinese (K_U13);
- is able to translate literary texts and writings from Chinese into Polish (K_U14);
- is able to interpret key terms from a culture of China through linguistic/philological analysis (K_U15);
- is able to use electronic and internet tools both in Polish and Chinese (K_U24).
Social competences
- is ready to act in aid of sharing and promoting cultural and linguistic heritage of China (K_K08).
Assessment criteria
Compulsory classes. Four unexcused absences per semester are permitted (60h). The total number of excused absences may not exceed 30%.
The grade at the end of the semester consists of attendance and active participation in classes (40%), as well as a test consisting in the translation of a prepared new text into Polish without the help of dictionaries and other tools. (60%)
The text will be entirely based on the acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Grading rules for credit colloquia
The translation must be coherent, logical, stylistically uniform, and correct
linguistically
and terminologically. Each sentence can be awarded 5 points, of which
individual points are awarded in the following assessment categories (KO):
KO1: technical correctness of the translation (2 points)
KO1 determines the understanding of the original text, its structure and terminology.
In order to obtain the maximum number of points in this category, care must be taken to ensure that the translation is consistent with the original sentence, both in quantity (all information must be included without any omissions or reductions, 1 point),
and quality (the sense must be transferred into Polish, 1 point).
KO2: stylistic correctness (2 points)
KO2 defines the ability to construct a translation that fits into
similar stylistic and linguistic registers as the source text. Assessment in this
category also includes the tone and fluency of the translation (avoiding
excessive literalism, attention to idiomaticity typical of
Polish, etc.).
KO3: linguistic correctness: (1 point)
KO3 covers grammatical, orthographic, syntactic and
punctuation correctness of the translation.
The point thresholds for the individual assessments of the translation colloquium are as follows:
0–59% - 2
60–68% - 3
69–74% - 3,5
75–84% - 4
85–90% - 4,5
91–96% - 5
97–100% - 5!
