The course presents the most important features of both modern and classical Mongolian, covering its phonology, morphology, syntax, as well as principles of spelling and orthography in a workshop-based format. It also discusses the typological and genealogical classification of the language, situating it within the broader context of the world’s languages. The course introduces the history and successive stages of the development of Mongolian, with particular emphasis on structural changes. An essential component of the classes is a survey of the writing systems used by the Mongols throughout the centuries. The seminar provides opportunities for the practical application of the grammatical structures discussed and for deepening students’ understanding of them. The course offers a solid foundation for further studies in the language, culture, and history of Mongolia.

K_W05: Has advanced knowledge of the structure of the Mongolian and Tibetan languages, their history and writing systems, as well as their significance in the cultural and historical context of the region
K_U11: Is able to use, at an advanced level, the writing systems of Mongolian and Tibetan (applying the rules of standard orthography) and to work with tools used for their study and analysis, such as traditional and electronic dictionaries, lexicons, language corpora, and databases.
K_K01: Is aware of the role and importance of language as a tool in broadly understood intercultural communication.

-Assessment of class participation, including contributions to discussions, analysis of linguistic examples, and workshop-based tasks.
- Written quizzes testing knowledge of key concepts in Mongolian phonology, morphology, syntax, and the history of the language.
- Homework assignments / short analytical tasks, involving the analysis of linguistic material and work with dictionaries, corpora, and classical texts.
- A written–oral final assessment covering both theoretical and practical aspects of the course.
