Human rights 3600-7-KM5-PCZ(Z)
The goal of the course is to familiarize participants with the dilemmas of human rights protection in Asia and Africa. Students will be familiarized with the problem of cultural relativism within the scope of protecting human rights and with the concept of their universality. During the course cultural and other local determinants of human rights protection in the regions of Asia and Africa will be discussed. Students will gain knowledge of the current problems Asian and African countries face in the scope of human rights protection, as well as main regional achievements in this field.

Having completed the course student:
- has in-depth and detailed knowledge (including terminology, theory and methodology) in studies on issues regarding protection of human rights in chosen regions of Asia and Africa (K_W01)
- has extended knowledge of particular problems pertaining to the cultures of Asia and Africa within the scope of human rights protection in a comparative perspective (K_W02)
- can search for, analyze, evaluate and use information on protection of human rights in Asia and Africa from different sources and can form critical judgement on its basis (K_U01)
- can indicate sources of cultural differences between different regions of Asia and Africa (K_U02)
- can use the knowledge in the field of cultural determinants of human rights protection to solve problems relating to cultural differences in professional situations (K_U05)
- can read, analyze and interpret texts and other works of culture (press, social writing) related to problems of human rights protection in Asia and Africa and appropriately place them in their cultural context (K_U08)
- can analyze most important phenomena in the field of human rights protection in chosen regions of Asia and Africa (K_U11)
- can actively establish relations and cooperate with representatives of other cultures, being aware of diverse approaches to chosen aspects of human rights protection in various parts of the world (K_K03)
- has awareness of the differences stemming from cultural variety and their influence on shaping social and political attitudes towards chosen problems related to human rights protection (K_K06)
- understands responsibility and ethical issues that come with imparting knowledge of chosen problems of human rights protection in regions of Asia and Africa (K_K07)
- can use cultural competences in professional situations such as aid programmes, government programmes, human rights protection programmes and national security issues (K_K12)
Assessment criteria
- active participation in classes (including reporting on human rights situation in a chosen Asian or African region)
- oral presentation
- written assignment / final test
- attendance control (a student can be absent maximum twice during the semester; in the case of absence due to illness, the medical certificate excusing this absence should be submitted within seven days of the last day of the leave specified in the certificate)
