Basic knowledge about languages 3600-7-KM4-WJ(Z)
The course provides general knowledge about world’s languages which includes their genetic classification, differentiation of their structural properties and sociolinguistic aspects (including different domains of language use and adaptation of writing systems). It also covers communication properties which include cultural backgrounds of discourse and ritual forms of communication (greetings, congratulations, condolences).Particular presentations deal with cultural properties of languages, manifested in the use of proper names and ethnonyms, cultural key-words and the use of language properties in the manifestation of social relations. An important factor in justifying language differentiation is the degree of their embedding in oral and written cultures. References and choice of non-European languages for more detailed presentations are linked with the state of research on the relation between language and culture, African languages in particular.
