The course is aimed at deepening the translation skills from classical, literary Japanese. The main task is to prepare students to read and understand historical or literary texts written in classical Japanese with the use of classical Japanese dictionaries (kogojiten)

Prerequisites (description)

Formal requirements Completion of three-year full-time first-cycle studies and a classical language grammar course. Assumptions The student should have mastered knowledge of the Japanese language, its classical grammar and Japanese culture, which is required to complete the first two years of the three-year undergraduate studies.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: alumnus knows and understands

K_W02: has extended knowledge of particular problems pertaining to the cultures of the Orient or Africa (within the scope of culture and literature or language or culture and religion issues) in a comparative perspective
K_W04: has extended and deepened knowledge of the Japanese language
K_W06: knows and understands methods of advanced analysis and interpretation of various products of Japanese culture, which are relevant for selected traditions, theories and research schools within the scope of studies on literature, language, culture and religion
K_W07: knows and understands the local academic tradition (methods of analysis, interpretation and evaluation) in the context of Japan
K_W09: has genuine knowledge of rules of communication, writing, reading in Japanese (contemporary and/or classical language)

Skills: alumnus is able to

K_U02: (in the field of culture and literature or language or philosophy and religion or history and socio-political issues) in a comparative perspective
K_U09: can compare and thoroughly analyze interrelations between selected literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of chosen region of the Orient or Africa, and the issues of tradition and modernity
K_U10: can carry out a critical analysis and interpretation of different products of culture of Japan appropriate to a selected tradition, theory and research schools within the scope of studies on literature, language, culture, religion or history employing an attitude of Oriental studies
K_U13: can select and translate into Polish most valuable literary works/writings of Japan
K_U15: has a good command of Japanese language at the B2 level

Social skills: alumnus is ready to

K_K08: understands and appreciates the value of tradition and cultural heritage of one’s own country and of Japan
K_K09: can see the need to enrich one’s own tradition by adding positive philosophical, social and cultural values of Japan, treats cultural synergy as an added value
