The theme of M.A. papers on Japanese religion and philosophy are selected by students according to their interests. The only condition is to provide enough materials. Preferable are the themes concerning doctrine and practice of Shinto and Japanese Buddhism, syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, Samurai ethos (Bushido), Japanese Neo-Confucianism, Japanese Christianity, contemporary philosophy in Japan.
This course will prepare students to undertake research and write a dissertation (M.A.) on a topic of their choice. Special attention will be paid to issues of research methodology, theoretical problems, and primary sources

Assessment criteria
Students’ abilities to prepare presentations on M.A. paper will be evaluated as well as the
M.A. paper on the chosen topic. The structure of the paper, bibliography, annotations, ability to formulate and prove theses will be taken into account.
