Master's seminar 3600-7-JA4-SM2(Z)
The seminar provides substantive and methodological preparation for writing a master's thesis that meets the criteria of a scholarly dissertation, as well as for the final diploma examination. Participants are required to actively engage in class, which includes delivering presentations that explore the subject matter of their planned thesis. Methodological and source-based research may be conducted within such Japanese studies disciplines as history, literature, religion and philosophy, art and aesthetics, and linguistics (depending on the profile of the specific seminar and the instructor's specialization).

Term 2024Z:
During the seminar, students will learn the basic issues of writing a thesis. Topics from the field of modern and contemporary Japanese literature (from the second half of the 19th century to modern times) as well as Japanese aesthetics and art or history are discussed. Students make a research and collect materials in Japanese, English and other languages on the topics they choose; they prepare papers in the form of multimedia presentations and a seminar paper that meets the requirements of the scientific text. |

Assessment criteria
Delivering an academic presentation that provides a synthesis of the state of research on the topic of the planned master's thesis.
Submitting a seminar paper that implements the methodological framework of a scholarly dissertation (the paper must demonstrate the ability to independently formulate a research thesis, appropriately select primary sources, and draw sound research conclusions).
Regular class attendance, with a maximum of 2 unexcused absences permitted per semester.
Bibliography
Depending on the chosen topic of the master's thesis, students will be recommended relevant methodological literature as well as specialized studies.
