Japanese History 3600-7-JA1-HJ2
The main thread of this lecture is the political history of Japan, from the prehistory till the end of WW II. We are going to present cultural causes of rising and falling of political systems, to show their characteristics, and influence on the political/cultural shape Japan. The lecture will be given in the chronological order.
The main problems will be:
- a way to the creation of a unified Japanese state; the process of rise and fall of the emperor system; the role of aristocracy in the state (periods: jōmon 11,000 years ago till 300 B.C.; yayoi 4th century B.C. till 3rd century; kofun 3rd – 8th centuries; Nara 710-194 and Heian 794-1192).
- the rise of warrior class; the rule of samurais – the rise and fall; cross-cultural relations and Japanese identity (periods: Kamakura 1192-1333; Muromachi 1333-1573; Azuchi-Momoyama 1573-1603; Edo 1603-1868).
- the restoration of Imperial rule; Emperor Meiji; collapse of feudalism; modern constitutional monarchy; Japan as a new superpower; Taishō democracy; Japanese nationalism; Japan’s foregn policy; the origin and developments of the Asia-Pacific war. (periods: Meiji 1868-1912; Taishō 1912-1926 and a part of Shōwa (1926-1989) till the end of Asia and Pacific War).

KNOWLEDGE
- has basic knowledge in the range of theory of humanities necessary to understand chosen cultural aspects in history of Japan [K_W04];

- has detailed and organized knowledge of socio-cultural issues in Japan within the scope of natural environment and ethnic, demographic and political situation [K_W09];
- can name and characterize basic cultural phenomena of Japan

- has organized knowledge of natural, geopolitical and economic environment and their importance for the historical situation of Japan [K_W11];
- is aware of the linguistic variety in Japanese culture and its influence on the cultural and political situation of the world [K_W14]
- knows and understands basic analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture characteristic of chosen theories and schools of research within the scope of history [K_W18];
SKILLS
- can indicate sources of cultural differences between the countries of the Orient [K_U02];
- can use the knowledge of history of Japan to analyze and interpret events taking place in the modern world [K_U04];
- can appropriately place Japan in the context of circumstances pertinent to natural, geopolitical and economic environment [K_U05];
- can use the knowledge of socio-cultural issues of Japan in typical professional situations [K_U09];
- has a skill in presenting detailed aspects within the scope of cultural issues of Japan in Polish and other foreign language taking into consideration the intellectual tradition of Japan [K_U21].
