Specialisation course: Persian poetry(L) 3600-7-IR4-PSPP(L)
The subject is taught as a follow-up to the lecture of History of Persian Literature and its aim is to make students familiar with the literary output of various schools and authors representing particular epochs in the history of Persian literature. Students should learn how to read and translate Persian artistic texts, and as far as poetry is concerned, to perform it and to give its semantic and structural analysis (including analysis of its rhythm and meter).
Term 2024L:
The class is devoted to contemporary poetry in Persian, with a focus on the work of leading poets and poets of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Forugh Farrokhzād, Ahmad Shāmlu, Sohrāb Sepehri and Simin Behbahāni. The analysis of the selected works covers not only their subject matter and language, but also the influence of the classical tradition - including Sufi motifs - in shaping modern literary forms. Particular attention is given to the translation challenges of translating Persian poetry into European languages. Participants learn about the peculiarities of the Persian language, its metaphorical richness and wordplay, as well as the cultural differences that can affect the interpretation of texts. Translators' practice provides a better understanding of the language structure of Persian poetry and the challenges of preserving the original rhythm, imagery and implicit meanings. The socio-historical context that has shaped contemporary lyricism is also discussed, including the impact of the Islamic Revolution, social and political change and the role of women in literature. This class allows participants not only to explore Persian literature, but also to reflect on its universal message and place in global cultural circulation. |
