Specialisation course 3600-7-IR4-PSPDP1
The classes are about learning about old Persian documents, as well as reading and translating them into Polish. The texts include frst of all shahs and viziers’ official letters and administrative documents e.g. land endowments, orders etc. covering historical periods which span between XVI and XX centuries. Focus of the course is put on mastering the reading of Persian handwriting, there are also some notes on the basics of Persian brachygraphy. Rules based on which Persian chanceries worked will also be analyzed.

Learning outcomes
Following completion of this course students should have acquired the following knowledge, skills and competence:
KNOWLEDGE:
- has in-depth and detailed knowledge (including terminology, theory and methodology) in studies on literature or language or culture and religion;
- has extended knowledge of particular problems pertaining to the cultures of the Orient or Africa (within the scope of culture and literature or language or culture and religion issues) in a comparative perspective;
- has extended knowledge of particular problems pertaining to the culture of Iran and Afghanistan (within the scope of culture and literature or language and religion or history and socio-political issues);
- has extended and deepened knowledge of the Persian language;
- knows and understands advanced analysis and interpretation methods of various products of Persian culture, which are relevant for selected traditions, theories and research schools within the scope of studies on literature, language, culture and religion, and history;
- has genuine knowledge of rules of communication, writing, reading in Persian language.
SKILLS:
- can read, analyze and interpret advanced Persian texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) and appropriately place them in their cultural context;
- can compare and thoroughly analyze interrelations between chosen literary texts and other works of culture, and the issues of tradition and modernity;
- can carry out a critical analysis and interpretation of different products of culture of Iran and Afghanistan appropriate to a selected tradition, theory and research schools within the scope of studies on literature, language, culture and religion employing unique attitude of Oriental studies;
- can analyze most important phenomena in the field of history, as well as socio-political, linguistic or cultural context of Iran and Afghanistan;
- can select and translate into Polish most valuable literary works/writings of Iran and Afghanistan;
- has a good command of Persian language at the advanced level .
SOCIAL COMPETENCE:
- has awareness of the differences stemming from cultural, religious and philosophical variety and their influence on shaping social and political attitudes as well as economic processes;
- understands and appreciates the value of tradition and cultural heritage of one’s own country and of Iran;
- can see the need to enrich one’s own tradition by adding positive philosophical, social and cultural values of Iran, treats cultural synergy as an added value;
- actively acts in aid of sharing and promoting cultural heritage and most important products of contemporary culture of Iran and Afghanistan.
Assessment criteria
- attendance control;
- continuous assessment (up-to-date knowledge of the subject, active attendance);
- final written or oral assessment, or final paper showing the ability to work with the document
