PIOTR BALCEROWICZ:
Reading fragments of the philosophical text of the Sāṁkhya school.
Author: Īśvarakr̥ṣṇa
text: Stanzas of the Sāṁkhya school (Sāṁkhya-kārikā) with Gauḍapāda's Commentary (Gauḍapāda-bhāṣya)
Note: editing begins after a long introduction (Introduction, pages 1–44).
We read the stanzas (kārikā) from the beginning so that we know the context, and then we will read the stanzas together with Gauḍapāda's prose commentary from stanza 10.
The stanzas are in slightly bold type (there is always a number at the end). The first stanza is on page 1 / १, lines 9-10 (duḥkha-trayyâbhighatāj…).
Topics: (1) introduction to the Samkhya school (first stanzas 1-10), then (2) the nature of primeval matter (prakr̥ti), also in relation to primeval consciousness (puruṣa), (3) characteristics of three properties of perceptible reality, the so-called guna (guṇa), which have penetrated strongly into Indian culture and thought, (4) the evolution of the perceptible world emerging from primeval matter (prakr̥ti).
