During the course, we will examine the evolution of Indian democracy from its secular, pluralistic foundations to its current state. We will try to understand how social tensions, political mobilisation and state responses have shaped India's institutional landscape since independence, as well as the enduring role of conflict and violence in the Indian political system since independence (Dębnicki 2000). We will analyse India's foreign policy priorities, regional dynamics and global ambitions, and their links to internal political changes (Zajączkowski 2008). We will then look at India's political trajectory in recent decades, in particular the role of communalism and religious nationalism and the transformation of the relationship between the state and society (Bhatia 2024).
The analysis will be complemented by two documentary films. Rakesh Sharma's "Final Solution" (2004) documents the dynamics of communalism and political violence, while Sadhana Subramaniam's "India: The Modi Question" (2023) is a timely look at the current government's relationship with the evolution of national identity and the rights of Indian minorities.
Upon completing the course, participants will have gained an in-depth understanding of contemporary political dynamics in India and will be able to critically assess the challenges facing Indian democracy.
