An outline of the history of regional literature (Bengali/Hindi/Tamil) in modern India covers the most important changes and phenomena in the literature of a selected language and region, with a focus on contemporary literature of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The course combines lectures with seminars and requires students to do their own work and actively participate in class discussions.

An outline of the history of regional literature - Bengali covers the most important changes and phenomena in the literature of a selected language and region, with a focus on contemporary literature of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Part I - Humanism and universalism,
Reflections on the human condition by R. Tagore, Jibananada Das, Buddhadev Basu, Samaresh Basu, Manik Bandyopadhyay

Part II - Individuals as agents, victims and witnesses of history
Depiction of important historic events in literature: Independence and Partition of India, Naxalite Movement, Language Movement of East Pakistan, Independence of Bangladesh, communal riots following the demolition of Babri Mosque in Ayodhya.

Part III - Literature as a vehicle for social change
Literature by authors belonging to minorities and marginalized groups, feminist writing of West Bengal and Bangladesh

Part IV - Literature as part of pop culture and form of entertainment
Detective novels and short stories, science-fiction, travel literature
