Survey of the First Indian Language - (Bengali) 3600-7-IN1-WIJIB(Z)
This is a four-semester course designed to introduce students to the basic knowledge of a first Indian language (Bengali/Hindi/Sanskrit/Tamil) and to the principles of its descriptive grammar. The course also aims to develop linguistic awareness of the selected Indian language through the analysis of grammatical structures. It covers the writing system, phonetics and phonology, as well as the morphology and syntax of the selected Indian language. Elements of word formation are also discussed. For Bengali, Hindi, and Tamil, the lectures focus on the standard modern language; for Sanskrit, the focus is on Classical Sanskrit.
Term 2025Z:
The classes aim to impart basic information about the grammar of the contemporary standard Bengali language (calit bhasa variety). The main topics include: the Bengali script; personal pronouns; demonstrative pronouns; the declension of nouns; adjectives; the verb ach; postpositions. Grammatical explanations are being introduced gradually, according to the level of difficulty. |
