Survey of the II Indian Language (Hindi) 3600-7-IN1-WIIJIH(z)
This is a four-semester course designed to introduce students to the basic knowledge of a first Indian language (Bengali/Hindi/Sanskrit/Tamil) and to the principles of its descriptive grammar. The course also aims to develop linguistic awareness of the selected Indian language through the analysis of grammatical structures. It covers the writing system, phonetics and phonology, as well as the morphology and syntax of the selected Indian language. Elements of word formation are also discussed. For Bengali, Hindi, and Tamil, the lectures focus on the standard modern language; for Sanskrit, the focus is on Classical Sanskrit.
