Reading hebrew texts 3600-7-HE3-LTH(Z)
Every lesson the students will get one article from „Ha’aretz” they will have to read it at home, then we’ll read it in class, stressing the understanding of a text, and then discuss the topic of the article in general. The articles will relate to different cultural, political and social issues in Israel. The course is supposed to be actual and updated; every article will be taken from the previous week’s issues. Because this character of the course it is impossible to decide in advance what topics will be discussed in each meeting.
In the second semester the classes will have the same character but in this semester the students themselves, each in a week will chose the given article.
The articles will be chosen according to issues as: youth delegations to Poland Israeli Society: Minorities in Israel Different ethnic groups (among Jews);Religions’ groups; Kibbutz; The Russians’ immigration; Arab Women in Israel; Jewish ultra-orthodox women and their education; The role of the Holocaust in Israeli society; Special problems which young Israeli face; Political situation in Israel: The Knesset and the elections’ system; Different political parties; Culture: The revival of the Hebrew language; Israeli theatre; Israeli films; Universities and education.
Term 2023Z:
The course is designed for the third year students of the Hebrew department. These students have already a good basis of Hebrew grammar and extended vocabulary. The aim of the course is to, gradually advanced them to “normal” Hebrew texts, mostly form the Israeli newspaper “Haaretz”, to make them able, to read, understand, and discuss the subjects in class, and to write about some of the subjects. So at the end of the year not only that their vocabulary is much richer but their skills for understanding texts, and having conversations about wide range of subjects is much more developed. “By-product” of that course is to introduce to the students variety of themes which are related to the state of Israel, and Hebrew culture |

Activity and presence in the class.
Being prepared each meeting, reading at home.
One presentation each semester.
One written work each semester in class, concerning the subjects read and discussed.
