Hebrew Literature 3600-7-HE3-LH1
A history of modern Hebrew literature that should be read backwards - that is, from twenty-first-century literature to the literature of the Haskalah (mid-nineteenth century), which developed in Europe and, from the beginning of the twentieth century, also in the Land of Israel. After the Second World War, and especially since 1948, Hebrew literature has been created almost exclusively in Israel.
This backward approach is intended to accommodate the students’ linguistic abilities, which will gradually develop, enabling them to cope with increasingly complex texts. A second reason is to familiarize them first and foremost with literature written in their own era, closer to their perspective and world.
The lecture will outline the development of this literature in its linguistic and cultural dimensions, and will also present examples of experimental approaches. This will highlight the various literary styles and themes explored in different periods and by representatives of different generations of writers. The main authors, both writers and poets, of Hebrew literature will be presented in more detail.
