Hebrew Literature 3600-7-HE2-LH(Z)
Besides the historical guide to the classical Hebrew literature (from the Hebrew Bible to the Qumran Scrolls) and its interpretation, the course has to get acquire students with the basic knowledge of hermeneutics and exegesis. The critical reading introduced during lecture covers a wide range of disciplines: textual criticism; examination of the historical and cultural backgrounds for the author, the text, and the original audience; classification of the types of literary genre present in the text. The place and role of the classical Hebrew Literature in the modern European literature will be shown on some chosen examples.
The development of the legal and mystical literature in late Antiquity is described. Next special focus is on the midrashic genre and pyyut poetry. In early Middle Ages of special interest is the continuation of apocalyptic literature and Jewish historiography. Also the emergence of Hebrew tale and travelers literature is focused on. Especially detailed characteristics provide the lectures on Hebrew religious as well as secular poetry of Mediaeval Spain. The development of the literature of mystical and pseudomesianic movements is also presented. Also the further development of some poetric genres ich characterized as Hebrew sonnet. The Hebrew literature of the 18th c. (including Hasidic literature) is grasped in the perspective of origins of modern Hebrew literature.

Knowledge:

Assessment criteria
The passing grade is verified on the basis of a final exam in the form of a test and a written term paper.
