The course focuses on reading and translation of the examples of various genres and themes in the classical and modern Arabic literature (poetry and prose, theological and philosophical literature, historiography, travelogues, essays and research in the field of humanities). Moreover, the students practice the comprehensive contextual analysis and interpretation of the texts, that takes into account the past and present political, economical, social and cultural situation in the Arabic and Islamic World.

K_W02: Has extended knowledge of particular problems pertaining to the cultures of the Orient or Africa (within the scope of culture and literature or language or culture and religion issues) in a comparative perspective.
K_W03: Has extended knowledge of particular problems pertaining to the culture of Arab countries (within the scope of culture and literature or language and religion or history and socio-political issues).
K_W04: Has extended and deepened knowledge of Arabic.
K_W05: Has detailed knowledge pertaining to the state of research on chosen issues related to Arab countries as well as in-depth knowledge of research centres in Poland and all over the world.
K_W07: Knows and understands the local academic tradition (methods of analysis, interpretation and evaluation) in the context of Arab countries.
K_W08: Demonstrates good knowledge of contemporary cultural life in Arab countries.
K_W09: Has genuine knowledge of rules of communication, writing and reading in Arabic.
K_U02: Can indicate sources of cultural differences between different regions of the Orient or Africa, also on the basis of source materials.
K_U06: Can use the terminology from the domain of religion of Arab countries to analyze and interpret religious phenomena, ethical motives and social behaviour, as well as cultural differences.
K_U08: Can read, analyze and interpret advanced literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Arab countries and appropriately place them in their cultural context.
K_U09: Can compare and thoroughly analyze interrelations between selected literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Arab countries, and the issues of tradition and modernity.
K_U10: Can carry out a critical analysis and interpretation of different products of the culture of Arab countries appropriate to a selected tradition, theory and research schools within the scope of studies on literature, language, culture and religion employing a unique attitude of Oriental studies.
K_U12: Can evaluate, select and describe the most important products of contemporary culture in Arab countries.
K_U13: Can select and translate into Polish most valuable literary works/writings of Arab countries.
K_U15: Has a good command of Arabic at an advanced level.
K_U17: Can choose and formulate a subject of an MA thesis, select and find sources in Arabic, refer to certain theories and other sources.
K_K02: Can actively cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations.
K_K06: Has awareness of the differences stemming from the cultural, religious and philosophical variety and their influence on shaping social and political attitudes as well as economic processes.
K_K08: Understands and appreciates the value of tradition and cultural heritage of one’s own country and Arab countries.
K_K09: Can see the need to enrich one’s own tradition by adding positive philosophical, social and cultural values of Arab countries, treats cultural synergy as an added value.
Assessment criteria
Attendance control. Max. two absences (4 hours) are allowed in a semester. In case of absence due to illness, a medical certificate should be submitted within seven working days from the last day of the leave specified in the certificate.
