Art of Africa 3600-7-AF3-SA(Z)
The course gives on overview of the specificity of a traditional and modern African art. It will survey the visual arts (including painting and sculpture) produced in Africa, it will also examine the ancient and modern examples of architecture existing on African continent. Several issues concerning the description, classification and interpretation of African are will be also discussed.

The course is designed to: present various forms of artistic expression that have developed or continue to develop in Africa, and to situate them within their historical, social, cultural, geographical, and religious contexts in order to enable the interpretation of specific works of art; trace the changing modes and forms of expression, as well as the themes chosen by artists (from prehistory to the present); outline the main trends in contemporary art (including independent art, street art, applied art, sacred art, “tourist” art, and the continuation of tradition); discuss the activities of art schools established in different parts of Africa in the 20th century; examine traditional architecture (in terms of function, style, form, and materials); present court art in contrast to traditional art and highlight the legacy of former kingdoms and cultures (e.g. Ife, Benin, Nok). |
