Knowledge of the African language 3600-7-AF2-WJA(L)

Lectures are devoted to various topics in Hausa language such as its history, geographic and sociolinguistic background. The main focus is on descriptive aspects of the language system. Segmental and suprasegmental units of the sound level are presented as phonemes, tone, vowel length, intonation and syllable structure. Presentation of morphological level includes different types of morphemes, that are characteristic for words representing different parts of speech. Due to the complexity of morphological transformation within the two groups of lexemes, namely nouns and verbs, the noun plurals and verb grades are explained with numerous language examples. The lecture also covers the derivation and composition within verbal and nominal forms. Syntax is illustrated by distinctive characteristics of complex sentences (including its variety with the relative clause) as well as word order. The lecture is oriented at demonstrating structural peculiarities of Hausa in comparison with other languages, including African and European languages.

The course duration is two semesters, assessed separately. The final grade is the result of the final exam.
