Religions of Africa2 3600-7-AF1-RA2
During the lecture students become familiarized with the phenomenon of religious contact based on the example of interaction between African religions and Islam and Christianity. Attention is paid to provide basic knowledge on Islam with special focus on its African forms. The lecture includes the history of Islamisation of Africa on the basis of J. Spencer-Trimingham and H.J. Fisher's theories. During the course elements of doctrinal systems of Sufi brotherhoods and Salafis, among others, are discussed and debates between representants of various trends in African Islam are presented. The second part of the lecture is devoted to Christianity in Africa. It presents the history of the spread of Christianity on the continent and problems related to missionary activities. The course includes the phenomenon of Afrochristianity, religious minorities in Africa, and the influence of African beliefs on religions of Central and South America. During the lecture the history of the studies on religious change in sub-Saharan Africa is presented, as well as terminology and main theories.

Having completed the course student:

Assessment criteria
Attendance control - a student can be absent maximum twice during the semester. In the case of absence due to illness, the medical certificate excusing this absence should be submitted within seven days of the last day of the leave specified in the certificate.
Final grade is based on oral examination.
