Monographic lecture -Buddhism in Tibet and Mongolia in the Light of Selected Biographies 3600-5-MT5-WMBTM
Lectures show history of dissemination of Buddhism in Tibet and Mongolia through biographies of selected persons, who had an impact on it. On that occasion also elements of Buddhist doctrine and main Buddhist trends in Tibet and Mongolia will be presented. Methodologies of literary studies and Buddhology will be employed.
Lectures start with the theoretical introduction on genre of biography in the world literature. The Tibetan literary genre of Buddhist biography (rnam thar) will be explained against this background together with information on its use in Tibet and application in Mongolia. Life story of the Buddha and its influence on the development of biographical and hagiographical literature will be demonstrated.
The biographies of Songtsen Gampo, Padmasambhava, Yeshe Tsogyel, Machig Labdron, Gampopa, Milarepa, Sakya Pandita, Phagba Lama, Tsongkhapa, the 5th Dalai Lama, Gendun Choephel, Altan Khan, Oirat Zaya Pandita, Khalkha Zaya Pandita, Zanabazar, (Danzan) Ravjaa, the 8th Bogd Gegeen, Agvan Dorjiev and Agya/Arjia Rinpoche will be presented. Thanks to showing life stories of these particular individuals different aspects of Buddhist activities will be exemplified, such as of king, exorcist, Tantric partner, yogi, translator, imperial preceptor, reformer, hierocratic ruler, rebel monk, khan, missionary, scholar, artist, crazy saint, politician and monastery abbot. In case of reincarnated masters not only stories of individuals will be presented, but information will be given on their lines of incarnations.
Lectures will be provided with presentations (PPT) and handouts with main information and bibliography.
