Poland encounters Japan (from the end of the 19th century till now) 3600-5-JA3-WM1
The lecture concerns the history of official and non-official contacts between Poland and Japan, from the end of the 19th century till now. It presents many subjects concerning mainly political, diplomatic and cultural relations, but also a problem of the image of Japan in Poland. The main problems will be:
1. Fukushima Yasumasa and his ride across Poland (1892),
2. Polish-Japanese cooperation during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905),
3. Japan’s recognition of the independent Polish State,
4. cooperation between General Staffs,
5. Japan’s mediation regarding improvement of Polish-Japanese relations,
6. outbreak of the WW II and diplomatic relations,
7. problem of reestablishing the mutual realations after the WW II
8. diplomacy in the 1980s and 1990s
9. mutual relations after 1989
10. the image of Japan in the Polish literature.
Mainly documents from Japanese and Polish Archives, and other sources, as e.g. belle-lettres, aricles, etc. will be used as the base of lectures.
