The Amharic Language 3600-5-AF3-JA1.1
In the frame of the course the students will have an opportunity to perfect the skills of understanding Amharic on the basis of reading and listening to various types of texts as well as to formulate oral and written texts in this language. It will expand the vocabulary of the students and broaden their linguistic knowledge of Amharic essential in excerption of the indigenous sources. It is designed to reinforce previously acquired communicative skills in comprehension of oral and written texts, translation, speaking and writing (with emphasis on developing conversational fluency on topics of general interests, some reading in Amharic literature and the contemporary press). The work will be supported by various reading and listening materials, as well as exercises, selected or prepared by the teacher himself. It will also allow the students to communicate in Amharic on the medium-advanced level.

Learning outcomes
After finishing the course student:
Knowledge:
- has a wider knowledge of the Amharic language, its structure, history and script,
- is aware of the complex nature of the Amharic language, its place and significance in the cultural and historical context of Ethiopia,
- is aware of the linguistic variety and its influence on the cultural and political situation of the world,
- has rudimentary knowledge of translation rules from the Amharic language into Polish.
Skills:
- can read, analyze and interpret simple literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Ethiopia and appropriately place them in their cultural context,
- can use the knowledge of socio-cultural issues of the Horn of Africa in typical professional situations,
- has a good command of Amharic at the intermediate level,
- can analyze and interpret basic source texts in Amharic,
- can fluently use the script of the Amharic language following the rules of standard orthography and can use the necessary tools to learn and analyze it (traditional and electronic dictionaries, lexicons, linguistic corpora, data bases, etc.),
- can properly function in the linguistic and cultural environment of Ethiopia,
- has a skill at formulating own opinions and conclusions in writing and in speech both in Polish and in Amharic,
- can use electronic and internet tools both in Polish and in Amharic.
Social competences:
- understands the need of lifelong learning,
- can cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations,
- can establish relations and cooperate with representatives of other cultures,
- has awareness of the cultural distinctness and its religious, philosophical, traditional and historical roots and its significance for understanding modern world,

- recognizes the need of dialogue between cultures,
- is aware of significance the culture of Africa have for the culture of the world,
- acts in aid of sharing and promoting cultural and linguistic heritage of Ethiopia,
