Amharic Language 3600-5-AF1-JAM2.2
The course of practical Amharic is in a form of exercises where students are expected to gain basic grammatical and lexical knowledge of the language as well as practice spoken language, read and write basic to intermediate texts. Starting from the Ethiopian writing system subsequently students will learn greetings and practice conversations in a variety of everyday situations. They will also learn how to formulate shorter to longer utterances in written as well as spoken form. The level of difficulty will gradually rise during consecutive years.

Learning outcomes
After finishing the course a student will be able to communicate in everyday situations: shopping, visiting a doctor, or traveling. He will know how to introduce himself and how to carry a conversation on general topics.
Student after competing the course:
Knowledge:
- has extensive knowledge of the Amharic language, its structure, history and script,
- is aware of the complex nature of the Amharic language, its place and significance in the cultural and historical context of Ethiopia,
- is aware of the linguistic variety and its influence on the cultural and political situation of the world,
- has rudimentary knowledge of translation rules from the Amharic language into Polish.
Skills:
- can read, analyze and interpret literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Ethiopia and appropriately place them in their cultural context,
- can use the knowledge of socio-cultural issues of Ethiopia in typical professional situations,
- has a good command of Amharic at the intermediate level,
- can analyze and interpret source texts in Amharic,
- can fluently use the script of the Amharic language following the rules of standard orthography and can use the necessary tools to learn and analyze it (traditional and electronic dictionaries, lexicons, linguistic corpora, data bases, etc.),
- can properly function in the linguistic and cultural environment of Ethiopia,
- has a skill at formulating own opinions and conclusions in writing and in speech both in Polish and in Amharic,
- can use electronic and internet tools both in Polish and in Amharic.
Social competences:
- understands the need of lifelong learning,
- can cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations,
- can establish relations and cooperate with representatives of other cultures,
- has awareness of the cultural distinctness and its religious, philosophical, traditional and historical roots and its significance for understanding modern world,
- recognizes the need of dialogue between cultures,
- is aware of significance the culture of Africa have for the culture of the world,
- acts in aid of sharing and promoting cultural and linguistic heritage of Ethiopia,
- perceives the positive socio-cultural values of Ethiopia and possibility to use them in own personal development and effective intercultural communication.
Assessment criteria
The final assessment will take into consideration all assessments during the accademic year:
- attendance control,
- continuous assessment 10%,
- written and oral tests (at least two in each semester)
- final written and oral assessment 90%.
