Learning outcomes
The student who attended this lecture analyzes the sources of Shinto doctrine in myths compiled in chronicles of the Imperial Court (8th century). The student recognizes political and economical conditions which enabled the development of Buddhism-Shinto syncretism. The student explains reasons of religious tolerance (Buddhism-Shinto syncretism) and intolerance (prosecution of Christianity in 16th and 17th century;prosecution of Buddhism in 19th century). The student analyzes doctrinal diffedrences of various Buddhist sects: tendai shū, shingon.
