History of Ancient Israel1 3600-3-HE1-WDŻI1
The course deals mainly with the political history of ancient Israel. It includes themes such as the institution of monarchy, economy, society and religion of ancient Israel. Particular emphasis is placed on issues discussed in contemporary research on the subject. The students will acquire the ability to critically assess the Hebrew Bible as a historical document. The aim of the course is to confront biblical historiography with external evidence, such as royal inscriptions of the neighbouring states as well as with various archaeological discoveries. Comparison of the Bible with the documents of peoples surrounding Israel aims to show Israelites in the more general ancient Near Eastern cultural context.
