" First Amharic source text that we will be dealing with are the chronicles of Emperors Menelik II and Haile Sellasie I; passages chosen describe important moments in the reign of those two rulers.
" Later we will read other historical sources like: "Zikre Neger" by Mahteme Sellasie Welde Mesk'el, "Yetarik mastawesha" by Kebbede Tesemma, "Yeityopya tarik" by Tekle Tsadik Mekuria and "yezemen tarik tizzitayye" by Mersie Hazen Wolde K'irk'os, from which fragments describing modernization efforts will be selected.
" Historical drama "Adwa" by Tekle Hawaryat Girmachew as well as the film by Haile Gerimawill illustrate this significant event in Ethiopian history.
" Next we will read excerpts from Ethiopian national epic "Fik'ir iske mek'abir" by Haddis Alemayyehu describing life in feudal Ethiopia.
" From the contemporary Amharic literature new types of novel are chosen:
o Ethnografical - "Kebuska beste jerba" by Fik'remark'os Desta about the Hamer tribe from the south of Ethiopia
o Detective - "K'onjowochu" by Serg Da with the film of the same genre "Semayawi feres",
o Authobiographical - "Tikusat" by Sibhat Gebre Egzi'abhier about the Ethiopian students in France.
" Contemporary poetry will be represented by two poets: Mengistu Lemma with his "Yegit;im Guba'e" and Tsegaye Gebre Menhin the author of "Isat wey abeba".
" A drama by Mengistu Lemma "T'elfo bekisie" which deals with the traditional ways of getting married in Ethiopia will be the last source text in this course.
