Korean Literature 3600-19-KOW2-LK(Z)

After the completion of this course students should be able to perform the general view on the Korean literature, know the historical background of the development of Korean literature, the most outstanding writers, major genders and forms as well as the major genders and forms, such as “hyang-ga songs” and song of Koryǒ (Koryǒ-kayo), “current tune” shijo and “narrative” shijo, long narrative poems kasa and poetry in Chinese hanshi, “old romances” (kodae-sosǒl), as well as the most important achievements of the modern Korean literature and drama formulated at the beginning of the twenty century by the influence of the Western trends including Realism and Naturalism, Expressionism and Surrealism.

Prerequisites (description)

The main purpose of the course is presentation of the classical and modern Korean literature, major artistic movement and literary streams covering the period from the earliest literary works to the most present literary achievements of the outstanding writers from Korea.

K_U06: read, analyze and interpret literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) and appropriately place them in their cultural context
K_U07: can compare and perceive interrelations between chosen literary texts and other works of culture of Korea (film, press, social writing) and the issues within the scope of tradition and modern times
K_U08: analyze most important phenomena/trends in art (painting, sculpture, architecture, other fields) of Korea
K_U10: can indicate most important intellectual problems, dilemmas, aesthetic preferences taking shape inside the culture of Korea
K_U14: can translate literary texts and writings from Korean into Polish
K_U15: interpret key terms from a culture of Arab countries through linguistic/philological analysis
K_U17: properly function in the linguistic and cultural environment of Korea
K_U21: has a skill in presenting detailed aspects within the scope of cultural issues of Korea in Polish and in Arabic taking into consideration the intellectual tradition of Korea
K_K01: understands the need to learn all one’s life

Assessment criteria

There is no attendance control
Final exam: oral (if studies online), written (if studies in the classroom).
