B.A. seminar 3600-19-JAW3-SL(Z)
The theme of B.A. papers on Japanese religion and philosophy are selected by students according to their interests. The only condition is to provide enough materials. Preferable are the themes concerning doctrine and practice of Shinto and Japanese Buddhism, syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, Samurai ethos (Bushido), Japanese Neo-Confucianism, Japanese Christianity, contemporary philosophy in Japan.

- has extensive knowledge of the Japanese language (its structure, history, script) (K_W12)
- is aware of the complex nature of the Japanese language, its place and significance in the cultural and historical context of Japan (K_W13)
- has rudimentary knowledge of translation rules from the Japanese language into Polish (K_W15)
- demonstrates a basic grasp of contemporary cultural life in Japan (K_W16)
Skills
- can read, analyze and interpret literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Japan and appropriately place them in their cultural context (K_U06)
- can compare and perceive interrelations between chosen literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Japan and the issues within the scope of tradition and modern times (K_U07)
- can analyze and interpret source texts in the Japanese language
- can translate literary texts and writings from the Japanese language into Polish (K_U14)
- can interpret key terms from the culture of Japan through linguistic/philological analysis (K_U15)
- can fluently use the script of the Japanese language and the necessary tools to learn and analyze it (traditional and electronic dictionaries, lexicons, linguistic corpora, databases, etc.) (K_U16)
- can use electronic and internet tools both in Polish and in Japanese (K_U24)
Social competence
- can cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations (K_K02)
- is aware of the significance the culture of Japan has for the culture of the world (K_K07)
Assessment criteria
Students will prepare presentations and semester papers. The seminar ends with writing a BA thesis.

- presence control (2 unexcused absences per semester)
Students’ abilities to prepare presentations on B.A. paper will be evaluated as well as the
B.A. paper on a chosen topic. The structure of the paper, bibliography, annotations, ability to formulate and prove theses will be taken into account.
