Japanese religion and philosophy 3600-19-JAW2-RFJ4
The lecture will explain the most important concepts and theories of Buddhism and the differences between Great Vehicle and Small Vehicle Buddhism. An outline of the history of Buddhism in Japan will be presented, as well as the doctrine of the schools of esoteric Buddhism sects (tendai and shingon), sects belonging to the Amidist current (jōdoshū, jōdo shinshū, yūzū nenbutsushū, jishū) to the Zen (rinzaishū, sōtōshū, ōbakushū). The doctrine of the Nichiren school (nichirenshū,) also known as the Lotus Sutra school (hokkeshū) and the related Association for the Promotion of Values (Sōka Gakkai) will also be discussed. Particular attention will be paid to the philosophy of the Zen school of Buddhism, which has had a huge influence on many areas of Japanese culture.
