Basic Knowledge about Japanese Language 3600-19-JAW1-WOJ1
The lecture provides a description of contemporary Japanese in its standard variety, begin-ning with hypotheses concerning the origins of the Japanese language, followed by an overview of the phonological system, pronunciation, and the morphology of individual parts of speech, with particular emphasis on classification issues arising from the distinc-tive features of Japanese.
The course also addresses issues of inflection (conjugation of verbal elements), perceptivity, transitivity and intransitivity of verbs, grammatical tense, aspect, and modality in rela-tion to attitudes toward the object and the recipient of communication, together with their usage, as well as active and passive verb forms and their range of application. In addition, the syntax of simple and complex sentences, the structure and functions of conditional sentences, and the encoding of malefactive and benefactive meanings are discussed.
The following topics are also covered: the phonological system, the writing system, the basic principles of orthography, lexical multisystemicity, the encoding of plurality and classification of nominal elements, the functions of adnominal particles, the encoding of deixis including its social dimension, as well as grammatical person and honorific forms.
