Cultural Anthropology 3600-19-AKW1
Course comprises basic problems, terms, theories and methods of cultural anthropology. The topics are: culture and nature opposition; social and kinship systems; psychological anthropology; language and relativism and universalism of language (and culture); supernatural powers, worldview, myth and rituals; time and space of life; contemporary anthropology and anthropology in everyday life.
1. Basic definitions and terminology, field of interests and research.
2. Methods in anthropology research
3. The beginning of anthropology – the word of ours and strangers.
4. Evolution discovered.
5. From evolutionism to functionaliym – new theories.
6. Functionalism, structural functionalism and structuralism as a view inside culture.
7. Bronisław Malinowski and his functional revolution in anthropology.
8. Culture and natural enviroment.
9. Culture and society.
10. Culture, individuals and society.
11. Word of supernatural powers.
12. Language and culture – language of culture.
13. Marksism and culture theories.
14. Structuralism and post-structuralizm.
15. Modern and post-modern theories of culture.
16. Constructionism in culture – mass and popular culture, local and global world.

Learning outcomes
K_W01 – has basic knowledge of the place and importance of Oriental studies in the humanities and their specificity in relation to the subject and methodology
K_W02 - has organized general knowledge (including terminology, theory and methodology) in the scope of cultural studies
K_W10 - basic cultural phenomena of societies fo Asi and Africa
K_W18 - knows and understands basic analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture characteristic of chosen theories and schools of research within the scope of cultural studies
K_U01 - search for, analyze, evaluate and use information from different sources
K_U02 - indicate sources of cultural differences of Oriental and African countries
K_U09 - can use the knowledge of socio-cultural issues of Asian and African countries in typical professional situations
K_U17 - properly function in the linguistic and cultural environment of Asian and African
K_K01 - understands the need to learn all one’s life
K_K02 - cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations
K_K03 - establish relations and cooperate with representatives of other cultures
K_K05 – make others aware of the cultural distinctness and its religious, philosophical, traditional and historical roots and its significance for understanding modern world
K_K06 - sees the need of dialogue between cultures
K_K09 - perceives the positive socio-cultural values of Asia and Africa and possibility to use them in own personal development and effective intercultural communication
Assessment criteria
After winter semester written test – credit with note.
After summer semester written examination - credit with note.
List of issues will be given after discussing each subject.
