Economy and modern imaginaries 3502-JIS-22

We will be discussing some imaginaries that reflect the interrelationships between economic and non-economic qualities, crucial points, patterns of ideas and points of symbolic turmoil related to some rhetoric and visual strategies of capitalism representation. Special attention will be paid to capitalist clichés that are engaged in economic calculation, and indicate non-economic qualities, such as “network”, “flows”, “fluidity”, “circulation”,“mobility,” “competition”, “communication”, “diversification”, “human resources”, “potential”, “social risk”, and “multiculturalism”. In our study of capitalism, we will use a combination of analytic tools and strategies derived from sociology, art critics and art theory, philosophy and from some “turns” in human and social studies (“iconic turn”, “spatial turn”, the “material turn”, studies on trauma, postcolonial studies), which offer a possibility to explore the constitution and construction of transparency and invisibility, as well as representation crises.
