Group research project - linguistics 3500-JIS-ZPB-PL
The aim of the course is to prepare a group research project in the field of broadly understood linguistics. The students' task is to choose – in consultation with the teacher – the topic of the project, also from among the topics submitted by third parties (in particular non-governmental organizations), and then contribute to its systematic realization through pre-scheduled partial tasks and according to the functions assigned to them by the group leader.
Students choose the group leader and persons responsible for each task; the teacher acts as a moderator and provides academic support.
The work on the final project report is carried out individually and in subgroups; their results are discussed during classes. The end result is a report from the group research project presented in the last class of the semester. A project on the topic proposed by am NGO is submitted to the relevant institution.
The project can be related to fields such as discourse analysis (e.g. advertising, politics, press), critical discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, multimodal discourse analysis, linguistic pragmatics, social semiotics.
The following stages in the work are identified:
1. selection of the topic of the research project
2. division of roles among students
3. collecting the research material
4. choice of literature
5. selection of the method of analysis and tools
6. scheduling the activities and work procedures
7. work on empirical material: a case study using the method selected
8. empirical analysis of the whole material
9. interpretation of the results
10. presentation of the results
11. preparation of the final report
12. discussion on the possible directions of further work on the topic and its possible implementation
Student workload:

K_U01 Using various sources, the graduate can search, select, analyze, evaluate and integrate information on language, communication and discursive aspects of social life, and formulate critical judgments on this basis.
K_U02 Has in-depth research skills in linguistics, linguistics-related discourse analysis and social semiotics, including analysis and synthesis of theoretical positions, selection of methods and construction of research tools, management and presentation of results.
K_U03 Can independently acquire knowledge and develop research skills in the field of linguistics, linguistics-related discourse analysis and social semiotics, and undertake autonomous actions to develop his/her skills and manage his/her professional career.
K_U05 Can use the achievements of modern linguistics, linguistics-related discourse analysis and social semiotics in order to critically analyze and interpret cultural artifacts, intellectual and ideological trends.
K_U07 Knows how to use argumentation and persuasion, based on his/her own views and opinions of other social actors. The graduate can formulate conclusions and synthetic summaries.
K_U19 Knows how to critically select information and materials necessary for scientific work, using various sources (in native and foreign language at the B2 + level) and using modern technologies.
K_K05 Is ready to set priorities for the implementation of the task specified by him/her or others.
K_K07 Is ready to participate in the preparation of projects related to communication and social discourses.
K_K09 Is ready to search for new methods and sources to supplement his/her knowledge and improve his/her professional skills.

Assessment criteria
Method:
class attendance, realization of individual tasks and performing the role assigned in the research team, participation in discussions, pilot study (presentation), final ZPB report
Criteria:
Two unexcused absences are allowed. If a student has more than two absences, including excused ones, she/he should ask the lecturer about the form of getting credit for the material from the classes when she/he was absent, and then obtain such credit before the end of the semester. If a student is absent at more than 50% of classes, he/she does not get credit for this course.
The final grade is the sum of the following components:
active in-class participation: 0-20%
pilot study presentation: 0-15%
theory / literature review part of the final report: 0-15%
empirical part of the final report: 0-35%
tasks related to the preparation of the report resulting from the role in the team: 0-15%

Bibliography is adjusted to the selected topic of the research project. The teacher provides the relevant literature on the Kampus platform.
