Models of Discourse Analysis (sociological) 3500-JIS-MAD-PS
This lecture explores the connections between discourse analysis and sociology and cultural sciences. It aims to familiarize students with selected models of discourse analysis. It provides an introduction to the theoretical framework of sociologically oriented discourse analysis. Discourse is considered as the use of natural language in social situations and within a cultural context. Discourse, as language use, is both communication and social interaction. It will present discourse research in the sociology of everyday life, motive-talk in social interactions, conversation analysis, organizational discourse analysis, and public discourse. It will demonstrate the connections between the narratological approach to discourse research and the sociological biographical method. It will also present the development of research on communication practices, from the ethnography of speaking to contemporary cultural discourse analysis. It will discuss the pragmatic, rhetorical, and semantic dimensions of discourse analysis in relation to social interaction processes.
