Contemporary social relations are highly invested with
visuality and visual codes – to understand contemporary
public sphere one must take into account the mechanisms of
showing, making ‘visible’, and representing social groups and
problems. Workshop will be aimed towards interpretation of
various dimensions of visual discourse in its traditional and
new forms.
Proposed literature from the fields of sociology and visual
culture studies will provide basic theoretical tools for
interpretation of various aspects of visual culture. The basic
aim of the workshop is to prepare participants for conducting
their own analyses.
Each class will focus on the interpretation of a selected
research problem or type of visual message. Examples of
topics, that can be discussed during the workshops (it can be
modified according to the dynamics of discussion or interests
of the group):
introduction: areas of studies on visual discourse and
basic dimensions of visual competence;
seeing oneself and others as a visual and technological
problem (and a type of social relation);
the place of image in technologies of power;
institutions shaping visual culture;
conditions of production and political economy of the
image (the case of cinema);
visuality as a medium for the political (including
ideological meanings, symbolic violence and politics
of memory);
social classes in visual discourse;
classic critique of mass culture;
reality shows and pedagogy of class.
The actual set of topics, literature and examples will be
discussed with the participants.

Assessment criteria
Attendance, reading assigned literature and preparing
research project are required. Two absences are accepted. In
case of absences above the limit students will be obliged to
write short assignments.
