Doing resarch with AI tools 3500-FAKANG-DRWA-SCC
The development of AI-based tools such as ChatGPT has had an
enormous impact on the way we search for and process information,
including for the purposes of producing and editing texts. As more
and more AI-based research and writing tools emerge, new
problems and concerns arise: how can we actually use them to the
benefit of writing and research processes? How can we do so
ethically — that is, in a way that supports individual creativity rather
than replacing it with generated responses?
The aim of the course is to develop and refine the skills needed to
conduct social research using AI agents, and to learn how to apply
generative AI tools effectively and ethically in the writing and
analytical process. Course participants will learn, among other
things, how to communicate research findings in a presentation, how
to carry out a literature review, and how to conduct qualitative and
mixed-methods research with the use of AI. Participants will also
learn how to use tools such as Elicit, Notebook LM, and Claude to
support the research and analytical process. In the 2026/2027
academic year, the classes will be based on the Conversational
Analysis to the Power of AI (CAAI) approach proposed by Friese
(2025), which suggests that researchers conduct thematic analyses
through a dialogue with an AI agent. The course has been designed
as a seminar with a workshop component, enabling students to
practise and implement their newly acquired skills.
To pass the course, students will participate in group discussions
and in-class tasks, submit homework assignments related to the
activities discussed in class, and prepare final presentations.
The use of generative artificial intelligence tools, such as
ChatGPT, is permitted for selected course and assessment
tasks. Every instance of use must be appropriately documented
and/or cited. Students bear responsibility for all content
