History of Finnish Literature II 3320-ZLF34C-HLF2
The course aims to 1) broaden and deepen the knowledge provided in the "History of Finnish Literature I" course by reading and discussing important texts, both literary and literary criticism; 2) gradual prepare the students to read literature in Finnish. During the first semester, especially at the beginning, we will mainly discuss texts available in translations (Polish and English). During this time, Finland-Swedish literature will be favored. In the second half of the semester, we will start making first attempts to reading literary texts in Finnish. In the second semester, Finnish will dominate in the reading materials. The order of texts will be determined less by historical chronology and more by their accessibility at a given stage of language learning.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student has an expanded and deepened knowledge of Finnish literature. They can indicate its links with broader European trends. They can recognize the basic developmental stages in the history of Finnish literature, the main literary currents with their most important representatives and works. They can recognize the characteristic traits of their work. They can read short literary works in Finnish. They have read a number of works important to Finnish literature. They can analyze these works as literary texts. They are capable of pointing out their characteristic features and discussing their place and role in the history of Finnish culture.
The student
- knows and understands the key phenomena occurring in the areas of literature, culture and history and advanced terminology used in the description of literature, culture and history, and understands its sources and applications;
- has a systematic knowledge of the methodology of research on literature and directions of research in literary studies
- has advanced knowledge of contemporary phenomena in Finnish literature and is familiar with contemporary processes and phenomena in Finnish culture in relation to literature
- can recognize various types of cultural products (literature, art) and subject them to critical analysis and interpretation by standard methods
- can search, analyze, evaluate, select and use information necessary to participate in classes, using various sources and methods
- can employ such research skills, phrase and analyze research problems, select research methods and tools, develop and present results so as to participate in class discussions and prepare their own works;
- can use substantive arguments, referring to the views of other authors, and draw conclusions
- can independently gather information and develop their own research competences, following the instructions of their research supervisor
Assessment criteria
Attendance and activity in classes (two absences are allowed; in case of a 50% absence, the course cannot be passed); a short (approx. 5 pp.) term paper, devoted to a selected work or to an issue concerning several works.
