Chronologically, the course covers the prehistoric period and the early Middle Ages, the period of political affiliation with Sweden, the union with Russia (as Grand Duchy of Finland), the emergence and development of the sovereign Finnish state in the 20th century, World War II, the Cold War period, and European integration. The most important social, cultural and political processes in the history of Finland will be discussed, including the oldest settlements and the formation of ethnicities, changes in material and spiritual culture, ethnic and linguistic relations, nation-building processes in the 19th century, formation of state institutions, social and political conflicts, economic development, the Finland's situation during the world wars and in the times of "Finlandization". Much attention will be devoted to Finland's connections with the surrounding countries - Scandinavia (especially Sweden), the Baltic area and Russia — as well as to the analogies and differences with the history of Poland.
