Issues in Applied Linguistics: Theory and Practice 3305-ZJP-SEM-LIC
The objective of the course is to help students to prepare their BA theses, based on the topics chosen by the students themselves. During the classes, the methods and stages of the research process, as well as the methods of data collection and analysis, will be analyzed.
In class, students will present their academic interests based on the knowledge acquired during their studies. The objective of the course is also to develop critical reading skills of academic texts in the field of linguistics. Likewise, students will learn to consult reliable sources related to the topic selected for the BA thesis.

1. Phonetics and phonology of the Portuguese language,
2. History of the Portuguese language,
3. Portuguese language syntax,
4. Morphology of the Portuguese language,
5. Dialectology of the Portuguese-speaking area,
6. Comparative Portuguese-Polish linguistics,
7. Comparative Linguistics Portuguese-Additional Romance Language(s),
8. Mirandese language,
9. Galician language,
10. Other Romance minority languages,
11. Portuguese lexicography.

• Knowledge:
The students know and understand
- basic terminology, subject and fields of research covering selected areas of science and scientific disciplines relevant to the Iberian studies (K_W03);
- basic concepts and principles in the field of intellectual property and copyright protection (K_W09).
• Skills:
The students can
- read and understand texts in Portuguese (K_U01);
- present your own views, opinions, discuss, present prepared issues in Portuguese (K_U02);
- recognize various types of Portuguese -language texts, place them in a general historical and cultural context and analyze them using basic terminology and appropriate methods (K_U03);
- independently acquire knowledge and develop skills with the use of appropriate sources from selected areas of science and scientific disciplines relevant to portuguese studies (dictionaries, lexicons, encyclopedias, source texts, monographic studies, etc.) (K_U04);
- write and edit a written essay in Portuguese (semester, one-year and undergraduate) using appropriate methods and appropriate sources relevant to the fields of science and scientific disciplines appropriate for portuguese studies (K_U05);
- prepare oral presentations in Portuguese using appropriate methods and appropriate sources relevant to the fields of science and scientific disciplines relevant to portuguese studies (K_U06);
- use basic terminology in the field of linguistics and other fields relevant to portuguese studies (K_U07)
• Social skills:
The students are ready to
- critical assessment of own knowledge and skills, understands also the need for continuous improvement and development (K_K01);
- planning and organization of work, cooperation in a team and compliance with the rules of professional ethics (K_K02);
- active participation in the culture of the studied region using various forms and media, and is able to work in a team while performing various roles (K_K03);
- tracking contemporary processes and phenomena occurring in the language, culture and literature of Portugal, PALOP countries and Brasil (K_K04)
Assessment criteria
Continuous assessment:
• Assistance and participation in class;
• oral presentation on own academic interests;
• drafting a detailed outline of the BA thesis;
• compilation of relevant literature for the BA thesis.
Bibliography
The literature will be tailored to the individual interests and research topics of the seminar participants.
