Issues in Iberian Linguistics 3305-ZJI-SEM-MGR-2U
The seminar is designed to prepare participants for writing their master's thesis. The program introduces students to key trends in contemporary linguistics, principles of natural language description, and various branches of the field.
The seminar covers a range of topics, including text linguistics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, systemic functional linguistics, and discourse analysis. These subjects are explored through core literature, as well as additional readings tailored to the students' selected topics.
Potential thesis topics may include issues in phonology, morphology, syntax, systemic functional grammar, lexical availability, applied linguistics, variationist sociolinguistics, text linguistics, and discourse analysis.

Graduates will have knowledge of the fundamental issues of general linguistics and contemporary linguistic trends, along with an in-depth understanding related to their master's thesis.
• Knowledge
Graduate know and understand:
- the place and significance of the humanities within the system of sciences and their specific subject matter and methodology (K_W01);
- the basic terminology of the humanities in the disciplines relevant to the study program, its sources, and applications (K_K02);
- research methodologies in the disciplines relevant to the study program (K_W03);
- the place of studies on the Portuguese and/or Spanish linguistic area within the humanities and their connections with other scientific disciplines (K_W04);
- the principles of linguistic knowledge necessary for the professional analysis and interpretation of texts representing various registers and functional styles of the target language (Portuguese or Spanish) (K_W05).
• Skills
Graduates can:
- search for, analyze, evaluate, select, and use information using various sources and methods (K_U01);
- independently acquire knowledge and develop research skills following the guidance of a scientific advisor (K_U02);
- apply basic research skills, including formulating and analyzing research problems, selecting research methods and tools, and presenting results in the disciplines relevant to the study program (K_U03);
- recognize different types of cultural artifacts specific to the disciplines relevant to the study program and conduct their critical analysis and interpretation using typical methods to determine their meanings, social impact, and place in the historical-cultural process (K_U05);
- argue substantively using the views of other authors and formulate conclusions (K_U06).
• Social Competences
Graduates are ready to:
- engage in lifelong learning (K_K01);
- improve their language skills in Portuguese and/or Spanish, continually pursue professional development and personal growth, self-assess their competencies, and enhance their abilities (K_K02);
- follow contemporary processes and phenomena occurring in the Portuguese and/or Spanish-speaking areas within the disciplines relevant to the study program (K_K03).
Assessment criteria
Continuous assessment will be based on:
• Attendance and participation in classes.
• Presentation of scientific interests.
• Preparation of a detailed outline of the master's thesis.
• Collection and study of relevant literature.
