Knowledge and power under the microscope: old book laboratory/Conhecimento e poder sob a lupa: laboratório de livros impressos antigos 3305-WWPL-U
The course aims to familiarise students with the rules of working with Iberian antique books in the broad sense, in particular printed books. During the classes, we will learn about: terminology specific to working with early modern prints; basic rules and guidelines for working with early modern prints; databases, digital libraries, catalogues, thematic websites and projects, including projects in the field of digital humanities; historical context (issues such as censorship and social networks); examples of printed materials related to the subject area of interest – knowledge and power in the Iberian context. In this context, we will look at encounters with the "Other", the transmission of knowledge, propaganda, and the use of books in a political context, also from a "long-term" perspective. The course will include not only classroom work, but also visits to the special collections of the University of Warsaw Library, specifically the Early Modern Book Department, and work with authentic historical collections. As part of the course, we will also learn about the technical background of database management (creating records in the Polish Provenance Database: https://data.cerl.org/polish-provenance). The course is intended to provide a safe space for the exchange of ideas, mutual inspiration and the "demystification" of topics related to early modern culture. The course is designed as a space for students of all specializations.
