Academic Writing and Editing in Portuguese I 3305-RTNP1-1U
The course is intended for first-year, second-cycle students. It aims to prepare students to read, analyze, and produce basic forms of academic writing in Portuguese in an informed and responsible way. The course is practical and introductory. It combines academic writing exercises with basic principles of scientific methodology and research ethics.
The course develops competences necessary for further academic work, especially for preparing scientific texts, research projects, academic presentations, and the master’s thesis. Students learn to identify the structure of academic texts, recognize research problems, distinguish between summary and critical commentary, formulate their own position, apply basic citation rules, and use sources in accordance with the principles of academic ethics.
The course covers:
- basic features of academic and scientific texts,
- academic text and discourse,
- reading academic texts and identifying their structure,
research problem, research question, aim, and argumentation,
- summary, paraphrase, citation, and critical commentary,
- critical review as an academic genre,
- basic principles of research methodology in the humanities and social sciences,
- literature review and bibliography management,
research ethics, plagiarism, authorship, and responsibility for one’s text,
- referencing standards and basic rules of bibliographic apparatus,
- use of digital tools in academic writing,
- responsible and transparent use of artificial intelligence tools,
- proofreading, editing, and self-assessment of one’s own text,
- preparation of the final critical review of a selected academic text.
Use of artificial intelligence tools: AI tools may be used only as support for organizing notes, planning the text, preliminary language checking, arranging bibliography, and preparing auxiliary reading questions. It is not acceptable to submit AI-generated text as one’s own work. Students remain fully responsible for the content, argumentation, interpretation of sources, citations, and final version of the assignment. If AI tools are used in preparing the final assignment, the scope of their use must be briefly indicated.
Content note: the course does not systematically include materials containing violence, vulgar language, or explicit erotic content. If the text selected by a student for the critical review contains potentially sensitive content, it should be discussed with the instructor in advance.
